To further understand the increased risk of heart disease and explore ways to reduce it, Iowa Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center is seeking people with type 2 diabetes to take part in a new clinical study involving a novel treatment that has been demonstrated to reduce the risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes such as blood glucose levels and body weight.
To join the trial you must be:
- Over the age of 50
- Have type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease
- Able to attend seven visits during the first year of the trial and two annual visits until the end of 2015
Patients included in the trial will receive comprehensive care via regular health-checks and medical testing, access to free trial medication and blood glucose testing equipment as well as compensation for your travel.

Do you have type 2 diabetes? Do you take 2 or more oral diabetes medications with or without Lantus? Element 2
This study involves patients with type 2 diabetes that take two or more oral diabetes medications with or without Lantus.
Qualified study participants will be placed on an investigational medication or Lantus and will be asked to make 10 visits to the study doctor.
To participate in the stude, you should:
Be study 18 years of age or older
Have type 2 diabetes
Be taking two or more oral diabetes medication with or without Lantus
If you qualify, you will receive study-related care and study medication(s) at no charge. You will receive compensation for travel expenses.

- Do you have Type 2 diabetes and have a history of heart disease? Are your sugars not in control?
This study involves the use of a diabetes medication called Januvia or placebo in patients with Type 2 diabetes with a history of heart or vascular disease (example heart attacks, procedures for heart attacks, strokes or peripheral vascular disease).
The duration of this study will be about four years; however, it may vary from three to six years depending on the time of your enrollment and the progress of the study. You will visit the study doctor four times in the first year and two times per year after the study concludes.
To participate in the study, you should:
Be > 50 years of age
Not be using insulin currently
Have a HbA1c of > 6.5% and < 8.0% (within the past three months)
If you qualify, you will receive study-related care and study medication(s) at no charge. You will also receive compensation for travel expenses.

- Do you have Type 2 diabetes? Are you at risk for, or have a history of, heart or vascular disease—including coronary artery, peripheral arterial or carotid artery disease, heart attack or stroke?
This study involves patients with Type 2 diabetes and risk of or history of heart or vascular disease.
Qualified study participants will be placed on an investigational drug or placebo. They will visit the study doctor four times in the first year and twice a year every year afterwards. The study may last up to four years.
To participate in the study, you should:
- Be > 18 years of age
- Have Type 2 diabetes
- Be at risk of or have a history of heart or vascular disease
If you qualify, you will receive study-related care and study medication(s) at no charge. You will also receive compensation for travel expenses.

- Do you have type 2 diabetes and take long-acting insulin?
If so, you may qualify for a clinical research study. Qualified study participants will be placed on meal time insulin and will be asked to make 10 visits to the study doctor and nine phone contacts up to 32 weeks.
To participate in the study, you should:
Be between 18-85 years of age
Have type 2 diabetes
Be taking long-acting insulin and other diabetes medication(s)
If you qualify, you will receive study-related care and study medication(s) at no charge. You will also receive compensation for travel expenses.
